It’s been almost a year since the idea of creating a book of alphabetical letters hit me. It was during calligraphy class, at the International School of Graphic in Venice, when one day our teacher suggested an intriguing exercise about an illustrated alphabet. We had to look for shapes, objects, anything that reminded us of a letter, and then sketch it on paper. That’s when it all began. The whole process slowly turned into a personal research of colors, structures, memories and thoughts more or less conscious that lead me into the making-a-book idea. The body of my project took shape during a book binding lesson while its soul was still up in the air. By then only the paper cover was talking about the alphabet: a vivid and bright orange background sprinkled with curious colored letters. The inside was mainly white pages except for a very few sketches spread among the empty sheets. Time passed by and with the seasons changing so my thoughts and ideas renew, strengthen, and turned alive into my book. All the watercolor letters were completed by the end of summer, each of them enhanced and defined with colored paper. The tiny size of my book and its images, the variety of subjects, and the combination of colored papers reveal a deep and constant seeking for small and  precious things, details that make the difference, and that peculiar touch that cannot be understood immediately. Autumn will hopefully bring words to my book. For now I’m leaving you with some images of my book, wishing to awaken curiosity or simply put a smile on your face. Enjoy!

E’ passato quasi un anno da quando e’ nata l’idea di creare una raccolta di lettere illustrate. Proposta come esercitazione durante il corso di calligrafia presso la Scuola di Grafica Internazionale di Venezia, si e’ poi trasformata in una ricerca personale di forme, colori, ricordi e associazioni piu’ o meno consapevoli che mi ha lentamente portato alla creazione di un libro. Rilegato a mano, durante un corso di rilegatura copta, non conteneva piu’ di qualche disegno. Oltre alla copertina, che gia’ richiamava un alfabeto fantasioso e vivace, c’era solo un’idea confusa su come poter riempire tutte le pagine bianche rimanenti. Il susseguirsi delle stagioni con relativi cambiamenti di luce e colore, hanno fortemente contribuito a rinnovare, rinfrescare e rafforzare le immagini che pian piano prendevano forma sulle pagine bianche. Completate tutte ad acquerello, col finire dell’estate le lettere sono state rifinite con cornici di carta colorata per racchiuderle, valorizzarle e dare a ciascuna un proprio spazio sulla pagina. Le dimensioni minute del libro e delle immagini in esso racchiuse, la varieta’ dei disegni e l’abbinamento ricercato delle carte colorate sono frutto di un mio costante e profondo interesse per il piccolo, il prezioso, il particolare che fa la differenza, il tocco che si coglie solo in un secondo momento. Con l’autunno alle porte portero’ avanti il completamento di questo mio lavoro dando spazio alle parole.
