Hand Painted Reading Time Chairs

Jan 15th

This is my latest work completed right before Christmas. The project consisted in developing a decoration idea for two white wooden chairs for the Aviano Air Force Base Elementary School. Once I sandpapered and re-coated both chairs, I proceeded with the more artistic side of the job by using acrylic paint.

For the first chair I had in mind the beginning of a poem by Emily Dickinson, “There is no frigate like a book.” It perfectly nailed the concept of combining books with imagination for a free ticket to anywhere we’d wish to travel. I pictured a dreamy atmosphere, so I used light blue as the main color to recall the sea, and pinkish flowers to decorate and divide images from words, like a frame. White background areas accentuate the contrast between colors in both chairs.

For the second one, I focused on a different theme: the meaning of reading. As we read, we assimilate new concepts. Sharing our knowledge to compare, improve, and consolidate thoughts is the consequent process that leads us into growing. Like a tree that develops roots into the soil to grow and mature fruits to feed everyone, the pages of a book, anchored in their cover, stretch out to share words of wisdom as food for our souls. For this idea bright colors have been chosen to emphasize the attractive beauty of this never ending process that is growing.
